Summer's here. Focus on cooling, pest prevention, and storm prep.
June in the Midwest means heat, humidity, and the occasional severe storm. Your house is shifting from heating mode to cooling mode, and thereโs a new set of concerns.
This Monthโs Focus
1. AC Tune-Up (If You Havenโt Already)
Your AC is about to work overtime. Make sure itโs ready.
- Change the filter (seriously, do it monthly in summer)
- Clean the outdoor condenser coils
- Clear vegetation away from the outdoor unit (2-foot clearance minimum)
- Listen for unusual noises

2. Check Attic Ventilation
Poor ventilation = hot attic = higher cooling bills = shorter roof life.
- Make sure soffit vents arenโt blocked by insulation
- Check that attic fans work (if you have them)
- Look for signs of moisture or mold

3. Pest Prevention
Summer bugs want inside your nice cool house.
- Seal gaps around pipes, wires, and foundation
- Check door sweeps and weatherstripping
- Look for ant trails, wasp nests, etc.
- Trim bushes away from the house

4. Storm Prep
Midwest summers mean thunderstorms, possibly severe.
- Trim dead tree branches near the house
- Check that sump pump works
- Know where your main water shutoff is
- Secure outdoor furniture that could blow around

5. Inspect the Basement/Crawlspace
Heavy spring rains may have caused issues you havenโt noticed.
- Look for water stains or dampness
- Check for musty smells (mold indicator)
- Make sure dehumidifier is running if you have one

6. Clean Ceiling Fans
Theyโve been collecting dust all winter. Now that theyโre running, that dust is circulating.
- Turn off the fan
- Wipe blades with a damp cloth
- Check that blades are balanced (wobbling = loose screws or warped blades)
