June Maintenance - Southwest
Extreme heat arrives. AC maintenance becomes critical and outdoor work is minimized.
June in the Southwest: Into the Fire
June in the Southwest is when things get serious. Triple-digit temperatures become the norm. Walking outside feels like opening a hot oven. This is the start of the long, brutal season where survival—not comfort—is the goal.
Your priorities shift completely. Forget new projects. Your only job is keeping your AC running and your landscape from dying. Everything else can wait until October. Hunker down and get through it.
This Month’s Tasks
1. AC Filter Changes—Every 2-3 Weeks 🔧
Time: 15 minutes every 2-3 weeks
This is your most critical task. In Southwest summers, your AC runs nearly 24/7. Filters clog fast, and clogged filters cause system failure.
Change or clean filters every 2-3 weeks without fail. Check them weekly in dusty conditions. Keep a supply of filters on hand so you’re never caught without one. Clear debris from around the outdoor unit regularly.
If your AC fails in June, you’re in trouble. Don’t let it happen.

2. Block the Sun 🔧
Time: 10 minutes daily
Every bit of solar heat you keep out is heat your AC doesn’t have to remove.
Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows during the hottest parts of the day—especially south and west exposures. Use reflective window film if you have it. Keep exterior shade screens deployed. Close drapes and blinds before leaving for work.
This simple habit can significantly reduce cooling costs.
3. Irrigation Intensifies 🔧🔧
Time: 1 hour weekly monitoring
Your plants are under serious stress. Make sure they’re getting enough water.
Increase watering frequency and duration. Check that all emitters and sprinkler heads are working—failed emitters mean dead plants. Watch for signs of heat stress: wilting, brown edges, leaf drop.
Deep watering encourages deep roots, which helps plants survive heat. Consider adding mulch to retain moisture.
4. Pool Chemistry Management 🔧🔧
Time: 1-2 hours weekly
Heat and heavy use make pool maintenance challenging. Stay on top of it.
Test water chemistry 2-3 times per week. Add chemicals promptly to maintain balance. Run the pump longer—12+ hours isn’t excessive in extreme heat. Clean skimmer baskets daily during heavy use. Monitor water level—evaporation is extreme.
A neglected pool becomes a green mess fast in Southwest heat.
5. Weatherstripping Verification 🔧
Time: 15 minutes
Make sure your home is sealed tight. Any gap lets hot air in and cool air out.
Check door seals and replace any that are worn. Look for gaps around windows and seal them. Verify that attic access is well-sealed.
A tight thermal envelope means lower bills and better comfort.
6. Minimize Outdoor Work 🔧
Time: Plan accordingly
This isn’t the time for outdoor projects. It’s too hot, too dangerous, and too miserable.
If you must work outside, do it before 8 AM. Stay hydrated. Take frequent breaks. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light-colored, loose clothing. Use sunscreen.
Seriously—if it can wait until October, let it wait. No project is worth heat stroke.
7. Check Vehicle AC 🔧
Time: 30 minutes
Your car’s AC matters too. Test it before you really need it.
If cooling seems inadequate, have it serviced. A failed car AC in 115° weather is dangerous. Check coolant levels. Make sure your battery is in good condition—heat kills batteries.
Your vehicle needs to be summer-ready too.
The Bottom Line
June in the Southwest is about survival. Keep your AC running with frequent filter changes, minimize solar heat gain, keep your landscape and pool alive, and stay inside as much as possible. This is the hardest part of the year. Accept it, adapt to it, and don’t fight it. October will come eventually.
