October Maintenance - Midwest
Crunch time. Winterize everything before the first freeze.
October in the Midwest is crunch time. First frost is coming (if it hasnβt already), and youβve got a shrinking window to get your house ready for winter.
This Monthβs Focus
1. Winterize Outdoor Faucets
This prevents frozen, burst pipes.
- Disconnect hoses (if you didnβt in September)
- Shut off interior valves to outdoor faucets
- Open outdoor faucet to drain remaining water
- Install insulated faucet covers
Difficulty: π§ | Time: 30 minutes
Already have a frozen pipe? Diagnose plumbing issues β
2. Final Gutter Cleaning
Most leaves have fallen. Do a final clean before winter.
Difficulty: π§π§ | Time: 1-2 hours
3. Reverse Ceiling Fans
Set them to clockwise (looking up). This pushes warm air down from the ceiling.
Difficulty: π§ | Time: 5 minutes per fan
4. Check Weatherstripping and Caulking
Last chance before heating bills arrive.
- Seal gaps around windows and doors
- Check attic hatch seal
- Inspect where utilities enter the house
Difficulty: π§π§ | Time: 1-2 hours
5. Store or Cover Outdoor Furniture
- Clean before storing
- Cover or move to garage/shed
- Store cushions indoors
Difficulty: π§ | Time: 1 hour
6. Prep Snow Removal Equipment
- Check snow blower (start it, make sure it runs)
- Stock up on ice melt (sells out fast)
- Inspect shovels for damage
- Know where your stakes/markers are for driveway edges
Difficulty: π§ | Time: 30 minutes
7. Bring in Cold-Sensitive Items
- Potted plants
- Garden hose reels
- Decorative items that could crack
Difficulty: π§ | Time: 30 minutes
8. Check Insulation
Take a peek in the attic. Adequate insulation saves money all winter.
- Look for gaps or thin spots
- Check around attic hatch
- Add insulation if needed (this can be a DIY or pro job)
Difficulty: π§π§π§ | Time: Varies
The Bottom Line
October is your last comfortable outdoor working month. Everything on this list gets harder or impossible once temperatures drop. Donβt wait for the first freeze to remember you forgot to winterize the faucets.
